A label change to two of our brownies

A label change to two of our brownies

If you pick up one of our Vegan Chocolate Brownies or Cashew Butter & Sea Salt Brownies soon, you might notice a small but important change to the packaging.

We have removed the “Dairy Free” claim and added “May contain milk” to the allergen information on the back of the pack.

We wanted to explain why—because while the label is changing, the recipes are not.

First: we haven't added dairy

Neither of these brownies contains dairy as an ingredient.

Our Vegan Chocolate Brownie remains made without dairy ingredients and remains vegan. Our Cashew Butter & Sea Salt Brownie also continues to be made without dairy ingredients.

The change relates to the chocolate we source and, more specifically, the precautionary allergen information provided by chocolate manufacturers.

So why does the label now say “May contain milk”?

Over the past few years, we’ve seen more and more chocolate suppliers add “may contain milk” to their product specifications.

Milk isn't necessarily an ingredient in these chocolates. The statement is there because there can be a risk of trace amounts of milk being present through cross-contact in the supplier's manufacturing environment.

Previously, we have been able to source chocolate that allowed us to confidently maintain our Dairy Free claim.

Increasingly, that is becoming difficult.

Chocolate supply is changing

Worldwide cocoa and chocolate supply has faced significant challenges, and as a small food manufacturer, having a reliable supply chain matters enormously.

At the same time, we have watched more of our chocolate suppliers gradually move to precautionary “may contain milk” statements.

Maintaining our Dairy Free claim would therefore leave us reliant on a very small number of suitable chocolate suppliers.

That creates a significant supply risk. If one supplier experiences shortages, changes its specification or stops producing a particular chocolate, our ability to make these brownies could be affected.

We don't believe relying on such a narrow supply chain is the right long-term decision for these products.

What we've decided to do

Rather than continuing to make an absolute Dairy Free claim, we've chosen to be more conservative and transparent in our labelling.

Our new packaging:

  • Removes the Dairy Free claim

  • Adds “May contain milk” to the allergen information

  • Continues to identify our Vegan Chocolate Brownie as vegan

Most importantly, we haven't changed the recipes to add dairy.

For customers who avoid dairy by choice, that distinction may be important.

For customers with a milk allergy, however, the distinction is even more important: please take the new “May contain milk” statement seriously and make your purchasing decision based on your individual allergy requirements.

Why we're telling you

We could have simply changed the packaging, but we know dietary claims matter to many of our customers.

Some of you have been buying these brownies for years precisely because of the ingredients they do—or don't—contain.

So when something changes on our label, even when nothing changes in the recipe, we think it's worth explaining.

This decision gives us greater flexibility and resilience in our chocolate supply while allowing us to communicate the potential cross-contact risk clearly.

It means we can keep making the brownies you love, with the same recipes, while being transparent about what we know from our suppliers.

And ultimately, we'd much rather give you more information than less, so you can decide what is right for you.
